There are basically two types of thieves: casual thieves, mostly acting
alone, and professional thieves.
The first "help themselves" to goods on open shelves and counters when
the staff is out of the room or busy with other things.
Professional shoplifters tend to operate in groups. They rely on
distracting attention, sometimes use trick containers, or act quite openly.
They give preference to upmarket merchandise and souvenirs.
Some police tips:
-
What shoplifters fear most is being caught red-handed. That is why one
of the most important preventive measures is to show them that there is
a real risk of their being caught in the act.
-
Put up written notices - in several languages - describing what will
happen to shoplifters who are caught.
-
In sales rooms with video monitoring or mirrors, there should be no
corners which are not under surveillance.
-
Merchandise likely to be stolen should be offered only at the cash
register or with sales staff nearby. Display only empty packages in
self-service areas.
-
You may temporarily keep shoplifters in custody who are caught
red-handed, but you must hand them over to the police without delay.
-
Remember that life and health are more important than the loss of
material goods. Do not place yourself or other people at risk.
