Scammers are mostly interested in cash from the till, goods displayed in showcases and shop windows, and purses in the staff cloakrooms.

These scams are often performed by transient criminals acting in groups who make a point of distracting the staff's attention.

Some police tips:

• Keep as little cash as possible on hand. Prevent access to the till and keep it from view.
• Expel suspicious groups immediately from the sales premises.
• Keep your staff cloakrooms, offices and store rooms locked.
• If necessary, warn other shops via the chain of alarm.
