Moral courage, solidarity and helping, looking instead of turning away,
involvement instead of indifference are always important, especially at a
major event like a football world championship.
Today many fellow citizens are becoming braver, and courageously
intervene on any sign of incipient violence. They prevent the situation
from escalating and make a decisive contribution to solving crimes.
However, it is often difficult to know how to intervene effectively
without putting oneself at risk. Really helping but without playing the
hero - the following tips should be of some help!
Some police tips:
1. Help without putting yourself at risk.
It is important to find help. Sometimes it is enough to use your mobile
phone to call the police or to ask bystanders to help. If it is possible
for you without endangering yourself, try to upset the criminals by
yelling that you are calling the police.
2. Organize help by calling the emergency number 110.
Call the police and never count on it that others have already done so!
Once you have informed the police, try to find witnesses who saw what
happened.
3. Ask others actively and directly for help.
Address others directly and get them to support and assist you! “You in
the green jacket, come with me, we must help the woman!” or “You in the
blue anorak, please call the police”. If you address someone directly it
is less likely that that person will refuse your request.
4. Avoid confrontation with aggressive people.
Speak calmly to any attacker. Do not provoke them. Speak politely, using
the polite form in German, if possible. Do not stoop to their level.
5. Take care of any victim.
Get the victim away from the dangerous situation by saying something like:
”Come with me (us), I/we'll look after you”, or “Come and sit with us”.
This way you do not have to address the attacker all.
6. Keep your eyes open and do your best to remember the offender's
characteristic features.
Write down what is most important on a piece of paper (time, place, course
of events, special features).
7. Offer your services as a witness
Unfortunately there are still too many people who pretend to have seen
nothing and refuse to give evidence even after observing an "explosive
situation" or even a crime from beginning to end. Do not be one of these
"not me" people!
